Police say DNA evidence connects 44-year-old Chester Turner to the 1997 slaying of 30-year-old Cynthia Annette Johnson. An LAPD criminologist inadvertently included evidence from that case for testing last year, when the department was trying to reduce the backlog of untested sexual assault kits.
The remaining three murder counts come from cases in which Turner was long suspected, but never charged, including the murders of 41-year-old Mary Edwards and 32-year-old Debra Williams.
In those two cases, another man was wrongfully convicted and imprisoned until 2004, when the DNA match to Turner was made.
Police say all four victims were strangled."
